Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua: George Groves calls for heavyweight mega-fight to be staged at Wembley Stadium

George Groves has called for the Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua fight to be held at Wembley Stadium.

With his 2014 rematch against Carl Froch, Groves helped usher in a new era of British super-fights at the national stadium.

Subsequently both Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury have headlined Wembley Stadium in heavyweight world title fights.

Fury and Joshua are due to finally box each other later this year, though neither the date nor the venue has yet been confirmed.

Groves has urged the event organisers to bring that heavyweight mega-fight to Wembley.

"Hopefully it happen on British soil," the former WBA super-middleweight champion told Your Site. "So British fights fans can get there easily enough and see the two best heavyweights from Britain from our era get it on.

"I'd love to see it at Wembley. It's the home of British boxing on that scale. It's the home of sport in Britain," Groves continued. "I'd love to see it happen there. I'd be disappointed if it was abroad.

"It's lovely to box in Saudi Arabia, it's lovely to box in Vegas or New York or Dublin or wherever else they're talking about, there's loads of places it would be lovely to box. But two Brits, they will look back and say: 'I'm so happy I boxed at Wembley Stadium.'

"But who knows? They've both done it before, maybe it's not high up on their bucket list."

Joshua will have a comeback fight in July and Fury could have another tune up bout too. That could be yet another stumbling block to their showdown finally happening this year.

"People have really invested in this fight. They've waited this long, they'll wait a little bit longer. Will there be a perfect time for them to fight? I don't think so because the perfect time will have been a long time ago. But we do want to see them fight, we are excited to see these two guys box," Groves noted.

Groves was speaking to Your Site at the West Ham amateur boxing club, which is being renovated by the social enterprise Volunteer It Yourself, in partnership with Dulux, in a project which is giving the young people involved the chance to learn on the job and take steps towards employment.

Groves and superstars like Joshua and Fury were all forged at amateur gyms like West Ham.

"It's great that projects like this happen and support is given to amateur boxing clubs, because they do matter," Groves said.

"Boxing teaches you a lot about life. You can develop a lot of skills in a boxing gym that can serve you obviously between the ropes but also in later life. To have people come together and do something good, positive and really develop skills that can serve them well in the future, in life outside the ring, whether that be to help them get into employment later on, just to teach them a new skill.

"Really a place like this is to feel proud of something that's yours."
